America's Comeback

The State of the Union is Strong

On Tuesday, President Trump's message was loud and clear- the State of the Union is strong. In his first State of the Union address, President Trump presented a vision that will build on our monumental legislative achievements. From passing comprehensive tax reform, to slashing harmful regulations, the culmination of President Trump's policy achievements have done nothing short of restoring the American Dream.

Vote Notes

This week, the House of Representatives took legislative action to fully fund our military and to protect young victims from sexual abuse.

I voted yes on the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act. This important and timely legislation protects vulnerable children from predators by making it safer and easier to report abuse. It increases reporting requirements, mandating that the governing bodies of amateur athletics report allegations of abuse to law enforcement. The legislation also expands oversight for governing bodies by instituting strict prevention policies and providing guidelines for handling reports of abuse.

I also voted to pass the Department of Defense Appropriations Act (H.R. 695), which fully funds the military and reflects the current needs of our armed forces. Ensuring the defense of our nation involves providing our armed forces with resources to advance U.S. interests around the globe, investing in innovative technologies to maintain our competitive edge, and bolstering our troop numbers. H.R. 695 appropriates the funds needed to achieve these goals. It also funds the long overdue 2.4 percent pay raise for our military and ensures troops, military families, and retirees receive high-quality medical care by enhancing the Defense Health Program.

Thank you to everyone who called my offices to express your thoughts on the classified memo. On Friday, the memo was declassified and released. I believe you should be able to read and evaulate the information in the memo for yourselves.

A NAFTA for the 21st Century

Last weekend, I traveled to Montreal, Canada as a part of a bipartisan delegation to participate in the renegotiation of NAFTA. We met with government officials, negotiators and business leaders from Canada, Mexico, and the United States. I was there to make sure that the interests of the United States, South Carolina, and my district were represented. It is imperative that the final agreement provides certainty for American farmers, manufacturers, consumers, and businesses that participate in our trade economy.

More Good Tax Reform News

In this week's edition of good tax reform news....

ExxonMobil announced $50 billion in U.S. investments over the next five years due to tax reform. The investment plan includes expanded operations, infrastrucutre improvements, and thousands of new jobs.
UPS announced a $12 billion U.S. investment plan due to tax reform. The company will expand their Smart Logistics Network, significantly increase pension funding, and enhance shareowner value.

Another testament to tax reform's role in America's economic comeback is the first jobs report of 2018: "U.S. employers added a robust 200,000 jobs in January, and wages rose at the fastest pace in more than eight years, evidence of a consistently healthy job market...Raises stemming from Republican tax cuts and minimum wage increases in 18 states also likely boosted pay last month."

Wrenzie and I were on board the train involved in the accident on the way to the GOP retreat. We were both unharmed. I want to take a moment to personally thank all of you who reached out to make sure we were safe. We are sending our prayers to everyone impacted by the accident.
