VIDEO: Rice to VA Director: “Did anyone get fired? Is the VA fixable?”
WASHINGTON, D.C.— In a joint House Small Business Subcommittee and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee oversight hearing yesterday, Congressman Tom Rice (SC-07) questioned VA Deputy Secretary and Senior Procurement Executive Jan Frye and VA Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization Executive Director Thomas Leney about the lack of accountability in the VA and the regulatory environment plaguing the agency.
During the hearing, a VA representative told the committee members the Choice program would violate the socioeconomic goals, statutory parameters set by the government for agency contract work, of the VHA. This response is a perfect example of the monolithic, bureaucratic webs our federal agencies have morphed into today.
“Look, if the socio-economic goals of the VHA include keeping veterans alive, I think the Choice program is probably pretty important and maybe we ought to look at expanding the Choice program to the ultimate detriment to a large part of the VHA,” Rice responded during the hearing.
