MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.— Congressman Tom Rice (SC-07) today met with local veterans at the Veterans Café & Grille in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to thank them for their service and address their concerns and needs. The conversation quickly turned to recent Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) scandals, preventable deaths, and insufficient care.
“It was great to meet with our local heroes and thank them for their service, but disheartening to hear how the VA has failed many of our veterans,” said Congressman Rice. “These people put their lives on the line for our country, and now our country is putting their lives on the line due to bureaucratic negligence. This is backwards and unacceptable.”
Last week, Congressman Rice joined his colleagues in sending a letter to President Obama demanding accountability be upheld within the Department of Veterans Affairs. They urged the President to request the immediate resignation of Secretary Eric Shinseki, Under Secretary Robert Petzel, and Under Secretary Allison Hickey.
“Accountability must come from the top. Enough is enough. We expect more from the public servants assigned to oversee the care of our veterans. It is unconscionable that our nation’s heroes have lost their lives due to negligence within the agency tasked with serving and protecting them. Our veterans deserve better,” the letter stated.
Congressman Rice is committed to improving veteran care, and his offices can help veterans dealing with the VA or a federal agency. For more information, call one of the district offices at 843-679-9781 or 843-445-6459.
