Washington, D.C.— Rep. Tom Rice (SC-07) today cosponsored the Taxpayer Nondiscrimination and Protection Act, legislation that would make political targeting by the IRS a crime and punishable by law.

“Many of you have called my offices today to express your concerns over the IRS’s recent abuse of power and have urged me to act,” said Rice.  “I was proud to cosponsor legislation today aimed at preventing this type of biased, politically-motivated discrimination. Currently, the maximum penalty for the IRS’s actions revealed last week is termination.  This bill will increase the maximum penalty for discrimination from mere termination to a criminal punishment.  As your Congressman, it is my responsibility to safeguard you and your tax dollars from abuse and fraud, and this is a responsibility I take seriously.”
