Washington -- Congressman Tom Rice (R-S.C.) issued the following statement regarding President Trump's meeting with President Putin:

“There is no doubt that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to sow discord among Americans. Fair and free elections are the foundation of our democracy, and we should stand strongly against Russia’s attempts to undermine our core values. Russia must be held accountable for their attempted interference in the 2016 election and we must take decisive action to prevent them from meddling in future elections. Additionally, we should uphold our sanctions against Russia, until they return their occupied territory in Ukraine. With that said, I have seen no evidence that Russian meddling altered our election, or that President Trump colluded with them. Given that our two countries control 90% of the worlds’ nuclear weapons, the current tension makes the world less safe, and I appreciate President Trump’s efforts to open a line of communication. But the bottom line is this: Russia is not our friend and President Putin cannot be trusted.”
