WASHINGTON – Congressman Tom Rice (R-S.C.) today wrote to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Chairman Gregg Harper asking them to consider reducing each Members’ Representational Allowance (MRA) by 5%, which would save millions of taxpayer dollars. He released the following statement upon sending the letter.

"Just as American families and businesses must operate under a budget, so should elected officials and the federal government. Fiscal irresponsibility has become the status quo in Washington, and it is past time for us to take action to rein in our reckless spending habits. President Trump’s request that each Cabinet Member cut their budget by 5% was a step in the right direction and Congress should follow his lead,” said Congressman Rice. “Each year I have been able to operate three full-time offices while still returning at least 5% of my MRA to pay down the national debt. This is a doable way to save millions of taxpayer dollars and should be part of the solution to meaningfully address our national deficit.”
