WASHINGTON – Congressman Tom Rice (R-S.C.) released the following statement today on the one-year anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol:

“January 6, 2021 continues to live in American history as the day we nearly lost the country our Founders fought for and left for us to preserve.

The peaceful transition of power is what separates this great country from third world countries and dictatorships. It’s what has given us a stable government for hundreds of years and created the American dream of hope, prosperity, and opportunity.

January 6th tested the fibers of our democracy and very well could have brought down our country. Any reasonable person could have seen the potential for violence that day. Yet, our President did nothing to protect our country and stop the violence. The actions of the President on January 6th were nothing short of reprehensible.

Despite the terrible events of the day and all the suffering it has caused, it shouldn’t be lost on us that our free and fair elections, our peaceful transition of power, and our Constitution survived. America is resilient. We are often tested, but we will overcome even the most onerous challenges.  We all must do our part to unite, not divide, and ensure something like January 6th never happens again in this great country.

I’m keeping the families of those who passed away as a result of January 6th in my prayers. Finally, thank you to our brave U.S. Capitol Police force, Washington D.C. law enforcement officers, and all National Guard who responded in defense of our democracy. I pray all Americans across this country reflect on today, remembering just how fragile the United States of America remains.”
