Happy Fourth of July

243 years ago, our Founding Fathers embarked on their grand experiment - a nation of freedom, liberty, and justice for all. Independence Day is an important reminder to cherish our precious freedoms and honor those who fight to protect them.

I hope you and your family had a great Fourth of July. God bless the USA!

Now Law:Bipartisan IRS Reform

Modernizing the IRS has long been one of my top priorities on the Ways and Means Committee and I'm excited to report that President Trump signed our IRS reform package into law this week!

This historic legislation will address many of the issues American taxpayers face when dealing with our nation's tax collector and will make the IRS more customer-service oriented. It requires the IRS to update their ancient information technology systems, implement an independent appeals process for taxpayer claims, and safeguards families and small businesses from having their accounts or property seized without due process. I am also proud that my legislation, the Electronic Signature Standards Act, was included in this package.

This legislation will ensure the IRS is accountable to American taxpayers and return the agency to its taxpayer first mission.

ICYMI: Lowering Health Care Costs

I frequently hear from people throughout South Carolina who are frustrated with the rising cost of drug prices and feel that the health care system is working against them. Thankfully, President Trump is taking bold action to change the system and put patients first!

Last week, President Trump signed an executive order and legislation that will bring some much needed transparency to pricing in the healthcare system by:

  • Requiring hospitals to publicly disclose the amount patients actually pay for services in an easy-to-read format and information on out of pocket spending will be readily available
  • Improving health care quality measurements and making them public
  • Ending “gag” clauses that prevent pharmacists from letting patients know about potentially lower prices for drugs

President Trump and I agree that introducing transparency into the health care system is key to empowering patients and lowering costs. I will continue to listen to your concerns about health care and work with the Administration to expand affordable health care options.

Interested in Interning?

I have three offices to serve the people of the Grand Strand and Pee Dee. In Washington, D.C., my staff handles legislative issues like introducing bills and committee work. In my Myrtle Beach and Florence offices, my staff handles constituent casework like helping veterans process their claims at the VA or solving problems with Social Security. At both locations, interns are a valuable part of the team and help the office run smoothly.

Internships are open to any college or higher education student. If you or someone you know would be a good candidate for one of my internships, please see here for more information and to apply. We accept interns on a rolling basis for the spring, summer, and fall semesters.
