I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s Day and will celebrate President’s Day tomorrow. The Ways and Means Committee held a hearing on the corporate income tax and had a markup on healthcare legislation this past week.
On Wednesday, we held a full committee markup and passed three healthcare bills, two of which I cosponsored. I am an original cosponsor of the Consumer Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills Act, H.R. 5826. This bill is a bipartisan solution to a problem that too many American families have faced. This legislation will protect patients from surprise medical bills, increase transparency, and reduce patients’ health care costs. I also cosponsored H.R. 5821, the HOSPICE Act. This bipartisan legislation will enhance the integrity in the entire hospice program, improve quality of care for patients, and hold bad actors in the system accountable.
Munich Security Conference
This weekend I will join a bipartisan and bicameral Congressional Delegation at the Munich Security Conference. The Munich Security Conference is widely considered a leading forum for international security policy. I will be joined by Senator Graham, Representative Duncan, and Representative Norman from South Carolina. Secretary of State Pompeo, Secretary of Defense Esper, and a number of international leaders will also be in attendance. This will provide an opportunity to discuss diplomatic initiatives and cooperation that can address our nation and the world’s most pressing security concerns.
The Ways and Means Committee hearing was focused on the corporate income tax cut involved in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that spurred the American economy. The economy is strong. More people are working. Wages are continuing to rise. In our district alone, the unemployment rate in every county is under 4%! Three counties are under 3%. Wow! This is a time for optimism for the future and to continue our work to improve America’s competitiveness. Please click the link below to watch my full statement during the hearing.
AARP is offering the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide to taxpayers with low- and moderate-income. This is a volunteer-led program. They have been trained and are IRS-certified to ensure knowledge of the current U.S. tax code. Last year, 2.5 million people used the program to help file their federal and state tax returns.
