Beyond the Call of Duty

The annual Military Times Service Members of the Year awards honors one outstanding member from each branch of service based on outstanding military service that goes beyond the call of duty, to include community involvement and volunteer work. This year's Navy Service Member of the Year was Petty Officer Craig Humes from Georgetown, South Carolina! I had the honor of escorting Petty Officer Humes as he was recognized for his exemplary service to his country and his community. It was humbling to participate in the Service Members of the Year ceremony and to honor Petty Officer Humes for his contributions on and off duty.

Supporting South Carolina Fishermen

A major victory for South Carolina's commercial and recreational fishermen this week: the House reauthorized the Magnuson-Stevens Act for the first time in over a decade! This legislation will support our tourism industry and strengthen our coastal economy by:

Providing the flexibility needed to effectively manage fisheries, enabling regional fisheries to meet local needs
Including critical reforms that will allow for proper management of recreational fisheries and support tourism
Increasing the long term sustainability of fisheries

As a South Carolina native and longtime sportsman, I was proud to cast my vote to support, protect, and grow South Carolina's fishing industry!

Expanding Health Care Options

I've heard from many South Carolinians struggling with rising health care costs because of flawed Obamacare policies. This week the House Ways and Means Committee passed a series of bills that will expand consumer-directed health care and lower the cost of premiums through Health Savings Accounts (HSA). HSA's make it easier to save for medical expenses and give families more flexibility and control over how they spend money on health care. The legislation passed by the Ways and Means Committee will make HSA's more useful and accessible, providing South Carolinians with more affordable health care options.

Meeting With SC Council for Exceptional Children
I met with representatives from the South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children this week. We discussed special education options available in the Seventh District. It was great to hear more about how the South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children is ensuring every child can succeed in school!
