Road to Recovery

Road to Recovery

After a long and devastating few weeks, we are shifting from response efforts to recovery mode. We cannot thank emergency management officials, law enforcement, and first responders enough for their round the clock efforts during Hurricane Florence. I am so proud to be a part of our resilient community, filled with selfless people who have been so willing to help their friends and neighbors through this storm. Though it will be long, we will be with you through every step of the recovery process. If you have any questions or need help with Hurricane Florence recovery, please reach out to one of my offices and we will assist you as best we can. The below photo is from Nichols - we WILL rebuild.

FEMA and SBA Update

Over the last week, I have been in close contact with FEMA as well as state and local officials to ensure our community has the necessary resources to recover from Hurricane Florence. As a result of our coordinated efforts, FEMA has granted Individual Assistance to Chesterfield, Dillon, Horry, Georgetown, Marion, and Marlboro. FEMA has granted Public Assistance to Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Marion, and Marlboro.

You can register with FEMA by applying online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by phone at 1-800-621-3362.  By registering with FEMA, you may qualify for federal disaster assistance such as help paying for rent or a temporary place to live as well as financial awards for essential home repairs or other disaster related needs not covered by insurance. Click here for what you can expect after registering with FEMA.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) offers low-interest disaster loans for businesses and nonprofit organizations of all sizes, homeowners, and renters. After registering with FEMA, you may also be asked to fill out an SBA application. You can apply online at DisasterLoan.sba.gov or in person at an SBA Business Recovery Center. SBA Business Recovery Centers are open in Chesterfield, Horry, Marion, and Marlboro. Click here for the BRC locations.

We will continue to keep you updated on federal disaster assistance that you may be eligible to receive. If you have any questions, please reach out to one of our offices!

Disaster Relief Legislation

This week, we took legislative action to provide Hurricane Florence relief. I led the entire South Carolina delegation as well as seven North Carolina Members of Congress in requesting both short-term and long-term Hurricane Florence relief funding. As a result, $1.68 billion in Community Disaster Block Recovery Grant - Disaster Recovery funding was included in the FAA Reauthorization Act, which passed the House and is now awaiting approval in the Senate. We were also successful in sending a defense and health spending bill, which included $8.8 billion for Hurricane Florence recovery, to President Trump's desk. These funds will be used to accelerate road repairs and address other critical recovery needs. Additionally, I am a lead cosponsor of the Hurricane Florence Tax Relief Act. This legislation will enable penalty-free access to savings, encourage charitable contributions, and make it easier for you to claim deductions for the cost of damaged property.

These are strong first steps that will help our community get back on our feet, but they are just the first steps. We will continue working to ensure our long-term disaster recovery needs are met.

Making Your Tax Cut Permanent

The House passed Tax Reform 2.0, a package of three bills that make the benefits of tax cuts permanent for families and businesses, encourage American innovation, and provide financial security. Tax Reform 2.0 will build on the economic momentum that is creating new opportunities and lifting people up in South Carolina and across the country. This legislation is all about changing the existing mindset in Washington. Instead of allowing decades to pass by without implementing economic reforms, we are actively working on policies that will create prosperity for workers, families, and businesses. Hopefully the Senate will take this opportunity to provide certainty for American families and businesses and support long-term economic growth!
