1 Million New Jobs

It has been almost six months since the enactment of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and our economy is roaring. Already, more than ONE MILLION jobs have been created and unemployment is at its lowest level in 18 years! Additionally, there are more job openings in the U.S. than unemployed Americans! This is no small feat- this is the FIRST time that the number of available jobs has exceeded the number of job seekers since the Department of Labor began recording such data. Republicans will keep improving the economy and helping Americans get back to work!

Vote Notes

This week, the House passed the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), a two year authorization of essential investments for our nation's ports, inland waterways, and flood protection systems. Water infrastructure is essential to generating economic growth, moving products domestically and internationally, and protecting our communities from natural disasters. In South Carolina, our world-class port infrastructure drives our state economy - facilitating 187,200 statewide jobs and $53 billion in annual economic activity. The newly opened Dillon Inland Port is incentivizing economic development in the Pee Dee and has already created 1,000 jobs! I strongly supported WRDA's reauthorization- investing in water infrastructure will create opportunities for South Carolinians, bolster our economy, and enhance American competitiveness.

Each 1 Teach 1 Entrepreneurship Institute

It was a joy to have students from Coastal Carolina University's Each 1 Teach 1 Summer Entrepreneurship Institute in the Capitol this week. The summer institute provides students with the tools they need to build prosperous, successful futures in education and business. Students in the program participate in seminars on leadership development, life-skills development, and college preparation. These students have bright futures ahead of them!

Supporting Local Job Creators

I had the opportunity to sit down with International Paper and discuss issues that impact job-creators and their employees in South Carolina. International Paper employs 2,000 people at their nine locations throughout the state, including a location in Georgetown. I have toured their Georgetown facility and met many of their hard working employees. I am appreciative of International Paper’s dedication to our area and their Seventh District workers!
