Bipartisan Budget Act

At around 5 am on Friday morning, the Bipartisan Budget Act passed the House of Representatives. I voted NO on this fiscally irresponsible bill. This legislation raises our spending caps by $300 billion dollars over the next two years, boosting military funding by $160 billion and allocating $128 billion to non-defense spending. There was an additional $89 billion allocated in response to recent national disasters. I could not in good conscience vote for a bill that busts through the budget caps that Congress agreed to in 2011, placing insurmountable debt on generations to come.

Lifting Up All Americans

This week, I spoke about addressing misconceptions and repairing serious flaws in our current immigration system. Some people say that we have a hard-hearted approach to immigration. The numbers say otherwise. America accepts 1.2 million legal immigrants a year, we take people in from all over the world who are searching for opportunity. I am willing to work across the aisle to protect the "Dreamers." However, it is time for us to prioritize the needs of American citizens. I look forward to an agreement that takes care of the Dreamers, secures our borders and moves us to a modern, merit-based immigration system that boosts our economy and at the same time lifts opportunity for all Americans.

Tax Reform in Our District

On Thursday, CVS announced that they are raising base wages to $11/hour and introducing paid parental leave because of tax reform. There are over 700 CVS employees in our district who will receive these benefits!

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will deliver relief to middle-income families across the nation who take the new, larger standard deduction. The bill significantly increases the standard deduction to protect roughly double the amount of what you earn each year from taxes. Now, individuals won't pay taxes on the first $13,000 of their income. Married couples won't pay taxes on the first $24,000 of their income. This translates to a $1,787 tax cut for the average four person household in our district.
