Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day!

My favorite title is "Dad." Being a father has been one of the greatest joys of my life and it is also the reason why I am working so hard to create a better future full of opportunities for the next generation.

To my magnetic, fun loving, forever young father, who passed far too early, to my grandfathers, and my wonderful father-in-law who picked up where he left off, to the friends along the way that served as second fathers, to my wonderful wife, to my precious sons, and to all of the fathers in South Carolina... Happy Father's Day!

Protecting our Coast

This week, I led a letter to Secretary Zinke opposing offshore drilling in our beautiful state.

Our vibrant coast is the lifeblood of local communities and drives South Carolina’s tourism industry, which generates $20 billion annually for our state. Every single coastal municipality in South Carolina, including the Grand Strand, has voted in opposition to offshore drilling. I have heard from many residents, businesses, and community leaders who worry about the risks offshore drilling poses to their livelihood. Our environment is our most precious asset- we must safeguard our natural resources and the communities supported by our coastline. I will continue to do everything in my power to protect and grow our coastal economy.

Vote Notes: Combating the Opioid Epidemic

Hundreds of thousands of American lives have been cut short by prescription drug abuse. In South Carolina, 879 people died of an opioid overdose in 2016 alone. That is why House Republicans have made combating this crisis a top priority. This week, the House passed 39 bills to fight this epidemic. Included in the legislation we passed were bills to:
  • stop the unlawful importation and distribution of synthetic drugs and give law enforcement effective tools to help keep our communities safe
  • help pharmacists detect fraudulent prescriptions
  • encourage non-opioid treatment plans
  • improve federal support for state-run Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs
Bills passed in Washington alone will not stop this epidemic, we all have a role to play to help those impacted by addiction. I will continue my work at the federal and local level to end this epidemic so that no parent, sibling, or friend has to endure the loss of a loved one to drug abuse. Stars and Stripes

On Thursday we celebrated Flag Day. The American flag is the strongest symbol of liberty and freedom around the world. When we wave our stars and stripes, we remember all of those who have sacrificed their lives so that we may be free.

Former President Ronald Reagan said it best: "When we honor our flag we honor what we stand for as a Nation — freedom, equality, justice, and hope."
