Education First

Secretary DeVos in the Seventh District

We brought Secretary DeVos to the Timmonsville Education Center and SiMT to shine a light on education and workforce development in the Seventh District! My mom was a school teacher, and education is an issue that is very close to my family. I can’t think of a more selfless profession.

I believe parents know what’s best for their children, teachers know what’s right for their students, and local educators know what works in their schools. We saw this in action in Timmonsville where we met bright young students who have been offered transformational opportunities through an innovative, localized approach. In addition to traditional subjects, students can enroll in technology focused courses where they learn skills such as computer programming. It was amazing to hear directly from students about the doors that have been opened to them thanks to STEM programs and the opportunity to learn about technical career paths. At SiMT, we showed Secretary DeVos how technical schools in our area are equipping people with the skills to get high-paying jobs and participate in the economy. We also hosted three roundtables where we engaged with local educators and community leaders about the progress we’ve made and how we can work together to turn the Corridor of Shame into the Corridor of Opportunity!

I am so proud that we have created unprecedented opportunities for the next generation. Now we are focused on helping young people seize it!

Thanks for Coming!

We hosted three Coffee with Your Congressman town hall events throughout the district this week! I truly enjoyed our conversations on topics from Hurricane Florence relief to legislation I've introduced this Congress and how we can break the gridlock in Washington. My title is representative and being accessible to answer your questions and receive input on how I can best serve you is one of the most important aspects of my job!

I appreciate everyone taking time out of their schedules to meet with me!

Marion Housing Visit

We secured the funding to help people rebuild their homes after the devastation of Hurricane Matthew and we are working diligently to obtain additional federal dollars to help people recover from Hurricane Florence. We check on the progress of the reconstruction frequently to ensure people are able to get back into their homes and back on their feet as quickly as possible. I was glad to meet with some of my constituents this week who were happy in their new homes. The recovery process is long, but we will be there every step of the way!

Economic Development Summit

My team hosted the Coastal and Pee Dee economic development summit where we brought together economic development professionals and community leaders from across the district to discuss how we can connect people in the Seventh District with opportunity. We have made so much progress but there is more work to be done. I am so proud to have such great partners at the state and local level working to lift people up!

Myrtle Beach Middle School Assembly

I had a great time at Myrtle Beach Middle School- just a few blocks from where I grew up- to talk about online safety! When I was in middle school, we had library cards. Now, everyone has information at their fingertips with iPhones and computers. I’m proud to do my part to make sure our kids are staying safe and responsible online.
